Whenever I’m with my mother, I feel as though I have to spend the whole time avoiding land mines.

—  Amy Tan, The Kitchen God’s Wife

I grew up feeling that sentiment. My mother was forever correcting me, threatening me, and scolding me.  I promised myself that I would never do that to my children.  I vowed that I would be sweetness and light, that I would only be encouraging and patient.

I was in for a rude awakening.

I found myself saying things to my children that my mother said to me.  I’m sure my children will find it as annoying and infuriating as I did. But it all comes from love.  They’ll figure that out later, as I did.

Happy Mother’s Day!

What did your mother say to you that you now say to your children?
